Sheet mask vs. sleeping mask: follow the format, not the name

The short answer. A conventional sheet mask is a physical sheet removed after its directed wear time. A sleeping mask is usually a leave-on formula intended for overnight use. The word mask does not make their directions interchangeable: check the instructions on the exact product.

How do the two formats differ?

Directions summarized from each product's own current page or pack. Formats decide the steps, and the exact product decides the details.

Why follow the format rather than the name?

A sheet mask holds essence against the skin for a limited, directed time and is then taken off. A sleeping mask is formulated to stay on while you sleep and is dealt with in the morning. For the two examples above, leaving the sheet mask on overnight is not what its directions describe, and rinsing the sleeping mask off after twenty minutes is not what its directions describe either. Neither product is better; they are different formats with different instructions.

Some mask formats fall between these two, and some hydrogel or clay masks have their own wear times. That is the point: there is no single rule for anything called a mask. Read the directions on the exact product you are holding, and if two products are both in your routine, follow each one's directions rather than merging them.

This page is about choosing a format. How often to use a sheet mask, and where it sits in a routine, are covered in our existing guides and are not repeated here.
