The founder

Dr. Jo Seok-yong

Doctor of Korean herbal medicine · 20 years treating reactive skin · Seoul

Baegayul did not start as a brand. It started as a treatment: one doctor, one patient, and skin that needed to be calmed rather than corrected.

The origin

For twenty years, Dr. Jo ran a skin clinic near Gangnam Station in Seoul, practicing hanbang: Korea’s licensed tradition of herbal medicine, taught in universities and regulated like any medical field. His patients were often people whose skin had been pushed too far: over-treated, reactive, tired of products that promised transformation and delivered irritation.

The brand began with one of them: a bride, weeks from her wedding, whose skin would not settle. He blended a herbal ointment for her by hand, built around Job’s Tears: a silky Korean grain, think rice water’s sturdier cousin, trusted by Korean medicine for centuries. It worked quietly, the way he intended. Word traveled. Demand outgrew the clinic.

In 2017 he founded Bluecellab to turn that ointment’s logic into cosmetics: formulas that read skin as a whole routine, never as a single heroic step, and that ship only when they sit gently on reactive skin.

“Baegayul began when I personally formulated a herbal-extract ointment to treat a bride-to-be who was suffering from problem skin. Our products still spread the same way: through the word of mouth of people who have used them.”

The dispensary

Peony, honeysuckle, dried yellow roots, and a dish of Job's Tears arranged on hanji paper

Job's Tears (율무)

A silky grain, like rice water's sturdier cousin. The foundation of the mask's herbal essence, chosen to support skin's own strength.

The three golden roots (삼황)

Three golden roots that pull nutrients from deep underground. Korean medicine's classic calming trio, and the blend the brand calls its three golds.

Peony (작약)

The world's favorite wedding-bouquet flower, prized in Korean medicine for moisture and nourishment. Grown in the mountain soil of Jirisan, Korea's first national park.

Honeysuckle (금은화)

The vine that survives winter to bloom, silver then gold. Korean medicine's oldest companion for keeping skin calm.
